Internet Offers It has become one of the most used "old sayings" of the computer generation, "If you are looking for something, you can find it on the internet." From love and romance to a used car, essentially the saying is true, if a thing, service, or commodity can be traded, bought or sold, there is someone on the internet willing to swap, sell, or purchase it. This is no different with health insurance. There was a day not too long ago when almost everyone had health insurance through their employer. Those who did not were able to go to the local insurance agency and purchase an individual policy. Those days are gone forever and health insurance has evolved into a much more complex and expensive proposition. Reaching the Masses As with any business seeking to reach the broadest possible audience to sell their products to, health insurance companies and brokers have moved onto the internet to hawk their wares, often with claims too good to be true. Insurance companies operate by averaging risk, and taking a cut of premiums so claims of low premiums and comprehensive benefits should only be believed after the "fine print" has been read. In theory, internet-based insurance applications allow insurance brokers to cherry-pick the lowest risks and offer low premiums. But it is still hard to be sure an internet insurance quote really is the best. The internet also offers those looking for health insurance the opportunity to shop around far and wide – sometimes too far and too wide since the internet is a global medium and some insurance offers might be valid in one country but not others. It also can be difficult to track down the insurance agent should an individual have a problem with their policy. Prescription Drugs The battle over affordable prescription drugs at times dominates the national health care insurance debate in the United States and around the world. Countries such as Canada and France offer comprehensive health insurance benefits for all their citizens, including access to prescription drugs. In the United States the monthly cost for even one necessary prescription drug can break a family budget. As a result, just about everyone with a computer and internet connection has been swamped in the last couple of years with email advertisements for internet pharmacies, many supposedly based in Canada. These pharmacies advertise the most popular prescription drugs, such as pain killers, allergy medications, and sexual performance aids, and claim to have discount prices. contact@understandhealthinsurance.com |
